What are we all about?
The South Wiltshire Paths Group was set up as a result of a Southern Wiltshire Area Board theme and aims to get local communities involved in positive activities that improve health and wellbeing. The project gives local communities the opportunity to have a key role in the improvement of their local Public Footpaths to improve access. This will develop community resilience and opportunities for everyone to get involved. All works done so far and in the future are in partnership with Riverbourne Community Farm and the Southern Wiltshire Rights Of Way Warden.

What we have done so far:

We have installed over 50 kissing gates across South Wiltshire, amounting to over 600 volunteer hours! We are currently working on a circular walk around Alderbury, which we hope to do in more Parish’s across the project area. On the Alderbury circular walk we have been working on resurfacing a very booggy area which was impassable during the winter, which has taken over 25 volunteer hours.

What we plan to do in the future:

We plan to continue increasing access to local footpaths by replacing stiles with kissing gates or improving path surfacing with the help of volunteers from local communities. Within this we will set up circular walks getting community involvement, improve access along key trails that pass through South Wiltshire such as the Avon Valley Path and organise walks that increase community interest and activity and to build connections with groups such as schools. By the end of the project the communities will be fully equipped with things like how to manuals, tools and a large list of volunteers to be able to keep their local paths in great shape.

How can you help?

Anyone can help us by becoming a volunteering whether you’ve got practical skills, office skills or just know a lot of local knowledge.  We need people for a wide range of tasks like installing kissing gates, putting up way marking, researching local information and creating pages for the Walks Guide.
