Sara-Jane Hancock (Saje), who has been the farm’s education co-ordinator since its inception, has won The Community Involvement Award (sponsored by New Hall Hospital) in the Salisbury Journal’s Educational Awards for 2017.
The nomination said “Some of the students have a real desire to pursue a career in farming; other students are struggling with mainstream schooling; many have behavioural issues and some have significant levels of autism. The education they receive at the farm through Saje’s dedication, enables most to qualify for achievement certificates at the end of their course. Saje has endless understanding and patience with an engaging approach which means that she connects with the students in ways that their mainstream schools may have struggled to find.”
Saje said that students were involved in running the farm in a very hands-on way. “It’s not all about farming, it’s about students gaining confidence, learning team building and communication skills.”
